about

From "Escape From Noise" (SST CD 133, 1987).

Tape music of course lives on, not in the classical section of your local record shop but over in pop. The longest-lived, most prolific and dedicated example (though one should point out not necessarily the most sophisticated) is Negativland, formed in 1977 in Concord CA and named for the Neu! track. Negativland is or was comprised of Mark Hosler, Don Joyce, Chris Grigg, David Wills and Richard Lyons. Like The Hafler Trio (above) deliberate camouflage is abundant (perhaps for legal protection), and like John Oswald (below) Negativland has gained most of their notoriety for being sued. In fact they've made a small cottage industry out of milking the "U2" single debacle. While a good bit of their work hovers around overweening unlistenability for me, at their best, like this track and the "U2" single, their output is iconic and memorable.

(This was written in 1999, when "record shops" were still a thing. These days, tons of cut-and-paste collages-today's equivalent of "tape music"-can be found on the internet under such names as The Evolution Control Committee, Stark Effect, Droplift, Vaporwave, The Bran Flakes, People Like Us, Escape Mechanism, and so forth. In addition sampling has become a major pillar of hip-hop, the largest grossing music genre on the planet. Go figure.)

about

Anode Seattle, Washington

I've recorded under the name Anode since 1972, in much the same way that Winnie the Pooh lives under the name Sanders.

What I've recorded may not be 'music' to everyone's ears, since it includes "organized sound" and soundscapes, both real and imagined. I make no apologies; my skill set is limited.

My authentic soundscapes can be found over here:
