"NYC" was actually the first city I assembled, as a proof-of-concept for the whole album.
Contents:
00:00-00:17 Tony Schwartz - "Sounds of the City" from "New York 19," Folkways FD 5558, 1954. One of, if not THE earliest soundscape recording. This excerpt is all jackhammers, which haven't changed much in the intervening years.
00:09-01:02 Moondog - "Street Scene" from "Moondog," Prestige 7042, 1956. Though not credited, Tony Schwartz was the recordist here too, capturing smelly diesel buses, coins hitting Moondog's hat, pedestrians, '50s car traffic, and a policeman's whistle (which HAS changed in the intervening years).
00:52-01:51 Nomadic Ambience - "Walking in the Rain in Manhattan, NYC" excerpt #1. 8/26/2019. A contemporary soundscape, with rain hitting an umbrella, pedestrians, car horns, & a man whistling for a cab. YouTube.
01:14-02:23 Nomadic Ambience - "Walking in the Rain in Manhattan, NYC" excerpt #2. 8/26/2019. Electric buses, pedestrians and thunder. YouTube.
01:48-04:06 Nomadic Ambience - "Walking in the Rain in Manhattan, NYC" excerpt #3. 8/26/2019. Sirens, wind, foreign tongues. YouTube.
02:11-03:55 Nomadic Ambience - "Open Window New York City Soundscape (Midtown Manhattan)," recorded the previous evening, 8/25/2019, from a 12th floor hotel window high above the street. Distant traffic, distant pedestrians, and traffic helicopters overhead. YouTube.
02:52-05-03:48 Irv Teibel - "Be-In: A Psychoacoustic Experience" from "Environments 3," Syntonic 66003, 1969. A return to the past, with a spontaneous gathering in Central Park of anti-war protestors, hippies, musicians and marijuana advocates. This soundscape, unique among its peers, portrays a specific bygone era in American history, a snapshot in time now vanished.
I've recorded under the name Anode since 1972, in much the same way that Winnie the Pooh lives under the name
Sanders.
What I've recorded may not be 'music' to everyone's ears, since it includes "organized sound" and soundscapes, both real and imagined. I make no apologies; my skill set is limited.
The interweaving of Real Life with gentle electronic music here is masterful. By marrying the in-studio with the out-of-studio, a hybrid is created which is both more universal and more personal. Anode
