The Crossing-Over Conscious sleep, waking dreams Voyages into the terrain of the unconscious Two halves often at odds Neither comprising the complete being By day, neurons fire in a straight line At night eddies, undertows and cross-currents appear The brain records images & stores them away At night they are brought out, projected, explored Fitted into the scheme of things The brain keeps a diary The brain keeps a diary The brain keeps a diary

about

This was an album I had all planned out, it was going to be Anode's debut release on the Palace of Lights record label. I'd done some preliminary recording and made extensive notes on how it would all fit together. However, when I sat down with Kerry to share my sketches he decided he was no longer interested in releasing it. I guess it didn't fit in with the aesthetic he envisioned for PoL, or it wasn't up to his standards.

So I put my notes aside, shelved the recordings, and moved on to other projects.

Recently though I ran across those initial recordings and my production notes, as well as the cover image, and thought to myself, hmmm why not try resurrecting the project? It might be interesting, after all these years—forty-two to be precise—to see if it still holds together.

One change from the original plan: the last track on the first side of the LP, "Sight Gag," was going to be listed on the cover and label with a track length of 0:00, as a sort of "deaf joke." Since you can't really do that on a CD, I had to change it to 0:10 of silence instead—my second choice but the best I could do.

Original liner notes to "Music for the Deaf":
"Ears are non-optional sensors; they are always on. It is a form of deafness therefore-psychological deafness-that causes us to not even notice all of the sounds around us that we have unconsciously "tuned out."

Music, by focusing our attention on details and patterns in the world, can help us learn to control this unconscious filtering. This is especially true of electronic music, which by its very nature challenges the artificial boundaries between music and the rest of the sound spectrum.

The planned composition of music is an enterprise unique to a few mammalian species, yet within this small group, musical activity is nearly universal. Studies of brain function have shown that the appreciation of music arises in an entirely different area of the brain than language, an area deeper and more fundamental, and thus more emotional than intellectual.

By addressing our psychological deafness, by working to remove the filters that distance us from the world, we can learn to engage on a more emotional level, in a deeper and more fundamental level, with the environment around us to which we ultimately belong."

About the cover: Fingerspelling is the most basic form of American Sign Language, used for names and exotic words for which there are no established ASL signs. Fingerspelling is also one of the only ways Deaf individuals and blind individuals-using their hands-can share a common language. The broader ASL, as a gestural language, has more poetry and more room for individual personality than any spoken language, and Deaf culture is rich and varied. I mean no disrespect by referencing deafness. Incidentally this cover image has been used as the backdrop on my SoundCloud account since 2007.

Caution: FOC (first octave content, 16-32Hz.) It is recommended that you listen to this album on good headphones or FOC-compliant speakers. Some of the elements will overwhelm lesser playback options.

about

Anode Seattle, Washington

I've recorded under the name Anode since 1972, in much the same way that Winnie the Pooh lives under the name Sanders.

What I've recorded may not be 'music' to everyone's ears, since it includes "organized sound" and soundscapes, both real and imagined. I make no apologies; my skill set is limited.

My authentic soundscapes can be found over here:
